Power agents block central Nazran, local residents report

In Ingushetia, the central part of the city of Nazran is blocked. Many streets are patrolled by power agents in masks with firearms; the city is full of armoured vehicles, local residents say.

As reported by the GUVD (Chief Interior Department) of Ingushetia, on the eve "a scandalous leaflet" was spread over the republic calling people to come out to a rally on April 16 against the republic's and federal authorities to be held in Accord Square in Nazran. To avoid chaotic performances and riots, the police have intensified security measures in the city.

"We must prove to everyone that we - Muslims - are able to establish due order in our republic. We shall live like human beings, and not to be utilized by Russian leadership," said the leaflet.

According to Ilez Gazdiev, a district policeman of the Nazran GOVD, the Ingush oppositionist Magomed Khazbiev was involved in making the leaflets and organizing the rally. Yesterday Gazdiev came to Khazbiev's house and brought a warning "on inadmissibility of violating the legislation on counteracting the extremist activities." The warning says that Khazbiev is one of the organizers of street protest action. The GUVD explains that they received this information by means of "media monitoring".

According to Khazbiev himself, he had nothing to do with the leaflets and the protest rally in Accord Square.
