Armenia: court leaves boxer Khachatryan in custody

The Court of Appeal of Armenia has dismissed the petition lodged by the defence of Samson Khachatryan, a multiple USSR champion in boxing and an opposition activist, asking to change his freedom restriction measure, and upheld the decision of the first instance to arrest Khachatryan for two months.

Ara Zakaryan, Khachatryan's advocate, told reporters about his intention to challenge the decision of the Court of Appeal at the Court of Cassation.

Mr Zakaryan said that the decision of the Court of Appeal was passed with gross violations. "The Court received information that was actually untrue, but they took the inspector's statement for granted," said the lawyer.

Samson Khachatryan was arrested on March 13 on charges of violent actions against state officials.
