Astrakhan: ground water gets into townspeople's houses
In the central districts of Astrakhan, the ground water is flooding the yards and houses of local residents; the reason is in worn-out engineering utilities, absence of the storm water drainage system and location of ground water close to the surface.
"Water is in the yards and apartments. Special vehicles arrive; but they never pump out water to the very end," said Elena Lopatina, a resident of Astrakhan. "Flats are full of mould, moisture, clouds of mosquitoes are everywhere. Rain-worms are in plenty. Our children are endlessly sick."
As reported by Zoya Chikalova, during rains and spring high water "our streets, yards and apartments are flooded."
"We take all the steps to help these people," said, in his turn, Leonid Khaimovich, Chairman of the Committee for Interaction and Work with Infrastructure of the city of Astrakhan. "After strong rains we send vehicles to these districts to pump out water."
