Georgian police detains oppositional activists

In Georgia, the police have detained several oppositional activists who were holding a protest action in defence of prisoners' rights. Merab Chikashvili, an oppositional leader, and Giya Burdzhanadze, a member of the National Assembly, are among the detainees.

Today, the patrol police urged the protesters to unblock the traffic in the Kazbegi Avenue in front of the Ministry of Punishment, Probation and Legal Support, but they rendered resistance. According to unofficial information, in total, five persons were detained after collision with the policemen. As a result, the roadway of the avenue was cleared from the protesters.

The picketers protested against harsh custody conditions in prisons. They also demanded to allow meetings of mothers with prisoners, the "InterPressNews" reports.

Advocates have already been admitted to the detainees, said the "GHN".
