A film about disappearance of people in Chechnya will be shown at Kino Pavasaris in Lithuania

A documentary called "Barzakh" by Lithuanian producer Mantas Kvedaravichius about tortures and kidnapping in Chechnya will be demonstrated within the framework of international film festival Kino Pavasaris ("Spring of the Cinema") which will be held in Vilnius from March, 17, till March, 31.

"Chechen towns are recovering after war but people disappear. Life is becoming peaceful but persons searching for a job suddenly get into a world where there are martyrs and torturers, secret prisons and mythical lakes - this has become an everyday phenomenon. Barzakh is a land between the alive and the dead", an announcement of the show runs.

The film "Barzakh" by producer Mantas Kvedaravichius about disappearance of people and kidnapping in Chechen Republic has also opened the documentary program of Berlin international film festival and DocPoints festival in Finland.

"I am an anthropologist, I have studied the problem of correlation between the state authority and human pain. That is how the theme of Chechnya appeared. I first only studied physical pain and then I found out that there was another kind of pain, for instance, the one of those whose relatives have disappeared and it is unknown whether they are alive or not. There are a lot of such cases in Chechnya. And the relatives' pain is quite terrible, just like cancer", Kvedaravichius said to a reporter of "Caucasian Knot".

Mantas Kvedaravichius (1976) graduated from Vilnius university getting a bachelor degree in cultural anthropology, then received a master's degree in Oxford university. He is currently finishing his course at Cambridge university where he is preparing his doctorate thesis and a monograph devoted to state authority and pain. Since 2006 he has been carrying out a research on tortures and disappearances of people in Northern Caucasus.
