84 persons perished in armed conflict in Northern Caucasus this January

In January this year, the smouldering armed conflict in Northern Caucasus caused harm to 248 persons. Of them 84 were lost and at least 164 were injured. These are the calculations made by the "Caucasian Knot" on the basis of its own materials and information from other open sources.

The 84 casualties include 52 civilians, 19 persons, announced by the authorities to be members of the armed underground, 11 law enforcers and 2 state officials. At least 144 civilians and 19 law enforcers were wounded. There is no data about any wounded members of the armed underground.

The 31 days of January saw at least 18 terror acts and explosions, and 11 armed clashes. Seven terror acts were prevented by law enforcement bodies.

Nine terror acts and explosions happened in Dagestan, three - in Chechnya, two - in Ingushetia, two - in Kabardino-Balkaria, one - in the outskirts of Moscow and one - in North Ossetia. Thus, 46 persons were killed by terror acts and explosions; of them 44 were peaceful civilians, a law enforcer and a militant. No less than 143 persons were wounded: 139 of them are civilians and 4 - law enforces. The bloodiest of them was the terror act committed by a suicide bomber in the "Domodedovo" Airport; it took away 36 lives; 125 persons received various injures. Three explosions were prevented in Dagestan, three - in Ingushetia and one - in Kabardino-Balkaria.

Eight armed clashes were registered last month in Dagestan, two - in Chechnya and one - in Ingushetia. They resulted in loss of 27 persons: 19 suspects of involvement in illegal armed formations (IAFs), 7 power agents and one peaceful citizen. Of them, 24 were killed in Dagestan and three - in Chechnya. 16 persons were wounded in warfare in Northern Caucasus: 13 - law enforces and 3 - civilians. Six of them were wounded in armed clashes in the Republic of Dagestan, and ten - in Ingushetia. For five times the counterterrorist operation (CTO) regime was introduced in Dagestan.

Three attempts on state officials were undertaken in January. Alexander Saroev, head of the Tsentralny Administrative District of Nazran, was killed in Ingushetia; and Mikhail Mambetov, head of the administration of the Chegem District, was shot dead in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR). Another attempt was committed in the KBR; however, the target of terrorists - ex-minister of internal affairs Khachim Shogenov - remained safe, but two militia officers - Shogenov's bodyguards - were killed.

In January, at least 39 persons were detained on suspicion of involvement in IAFs or as militants' helpers: 20 persons in Dagestan, 16 - in Chechnya, 2 - abroad and one in Volgograd. Four of them surrendered and pled guilty: two in Chechnya, one in Dagestan and one in Volgograd.

  • Two natives of Northern Caucasus injured in shootout near “Wildberries” office in Moscow

    A shootout took place near an office of the “Wildberries” Company in the centre of Moscow. As a result, at least one person has been killed and several others have been wounded, sources report. Among the victims have been Abubakar Mestoev and Umar Chichaev, mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters from Northern Caucasus, reports Shamil Khadulaev, the chair of the Public Oversight Commission (POC) of Dagestan.
