Georgian women-citizens detained in Malaysia to be tried on March 4

The consideration of the case of the women-citizens of Georgia detained in Malaysia for drug trafficking is scheduled for March 4. This was reported today by Nino Kalandadze, Deputy Foreign Minister of Georgia. According to her story, Eldar Davitiani, the husband of one of the detainees, has been already sentenced in Georgia to 15 years of imprisonment.

It has become known today that the Tbilisi Court has sentenced Eldar Davitiani to 15 years in prison. He confessed that he had sent the women with drugs to Malaysia; and they did not know that the amphetamine was hidden in frames of paintings.

"The Malaysian court is not obliged to take into account the information provided by us; although we hope that the court will consider the work conducted by our law enforcers," Ms Kalandadze said at today's briefing and added that "of course, the conviction of Eldar Davitiani does not exempt the Georgian women detained in Malaysia from responsibility."

"On the technical side, we know that the trial in Malaysia, initially scheduled for February 12, was reappointed for March 4," the "Trend" quotes Ms Kalandadze as saying.

According to her story, the Georgian party is waiting for the expert's conclusion, which will be decisive argument for consideration of the merits. Late last week, employees of the Consular Department of the Georgian Foreign Ministry contacted the Malaysian party and learnt that the expert's conclusion was not ready yet, the "News-Georgia" reports.
