ECtHR dismisses complaint of oppositionists on parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan
The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has rejected the complaints filed by opposition figures and other persons in relation to the parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan, which were held on November 7, 2010, after the authorities of the country had agreed to pay compensations by analogy with the case "Namet Aliev versus Azerbaijan".
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 9, 2010, the ECtHR found a violation of Article 3 of Protocol No. 1 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) (the right to free elections) in respect of Namet Aliev, 44, an Azerbaijani citizen, and obliged the Azerbaijani government to pay 7500 euros of moral compensation to the applicant. Mr Aliev had appealed to the Strasbourg Court (ECtHR) in connection with violations at the 2005 parliamentary elections.
"The Azerbaijani government, having addressed the ECtHR, agreed to pay compensation in the amount of 9000 euros to the applicants by analogy with the case of Namet Aliev. The address of the government was accepted, and the ECtHR rejected the above complaints," the IA "Trend" quotes Chingiz Askerov, Plenipotentiary Representative of the Azerbaijani government at the European Court of Human Rights.
