The attack took place near Khankala, the main military base of Chechnya. When three cars with servicemen came up to the checkpoint located at the gate of Grozny heavy fire was opened upon them from cars passing along the highway.
One of the attackers was killed as a result of the skirmish. A soldier of contract service and a resident of the settlement of Shalaji, Urus-Martan district, perished, too. Bislan Elimkhanov, battalion commander of riot squad of GRU, is among the wounded.
The main version of the accident offered by the investigation is the gunmen’s attack, however “Caucasian Knot’s” interlocutor in the republican military commandant's office considers that it has been an attempt at Elimkhanov.
According to him, local members of the top brass with whom Elimkhanov had formerly had serious confrontations might be involved in this action for the battalion of riot squad whose commander he is is subordinate to GRU and accordingly, to the Ministry of Defense of Russia, not local enforcement agencies.
