In Georgia, opponents of new Constitution send letter to EU bosses

On September 28, fourteen leaders of various oppositional forces of Georgia sent a joint statement to the President of the Council of Europe, Chairman of the Venice Commission and to David Bakradze, Chairman of the Georgian Parliament, demanding to take action against adoption by the parliament of the new Constitution.

"If the Constitution lack a provision prohibiting former Georgian presidents to occupy the posts of Prime Minister, Speaker of the Parliament, and Chairman of the Supreme or Constitutional Court, the fact will become a precedent of de jure legitimization of dictatorship in Europe," says the statement.

The authors are also urging to develop some categorical recommendations to Georgian authorities regarding the proposed constitutional amendments, the IA "News-Georgia" reports. "We call you to resist this process now, otherwise, it may be too late," runs the document.
