Disappearance of people is still central problem in Chechnya

Moscow Helsinki Group Chairwoman Lyudmila Alekseyeva holds such an opinion. On October 22, the MHG presented a report on the human rights situation in the Chechen Republic.

"The situation in the region has frozen in fact - civilians die and disappear," Mrs. Alekseyeva noted at a press conference in Moscow.

This week, the pro-Russian government of Chechnya has published data according to which about 300 people have been abducted or disappeared without a trace in the republic since the beginning of the year. Human rights defenders believe these data are incomplete and the number of the missing is much larger.
