Resident of Dagestan accused of killing a militiaman states he shot in self-defence

Yakub Kartakaev, born in Dagestan, accused of murdering a militiaman in the Moscow's district of Kuntsevo, has stated today in the Zamoskvoretsk district court of Moscow that he shot in self-defence in response to the abuse of power by MIA officers.

According to the investigation data, on the night of March 13, "Kuntsevo" militia officers stopped Kartakaev in Polotskaya Street in Western Moscow for checking documents. During the check, Y. Kartakaev shot at the militiamen several times. One of them was killed, the other wounded. Kartakaev who also was wounded was hiding in the village of Tuchkovo near Moscow where he was arrested.

According to Kartakaev, when the militiamen asked him to show his documents they started to insult him, flapped him in the face, and a fight started. "I protected my dignity, my life," said Kartakaev.

The resident of Dagestan who has never worked in Moscow claims that he bought a pistol and carried it on him for self-defence. He also states that he "regrets a bit" about what has happened.

He explains the fact that he fled from the scene because of "being wounded and not aware of anything," reports ITAR-TASS.

Today, the court has issued an order to arrest Yakub Kartakaev, thereby granting the request of the Investigation department of the Russian Investigation Committee under the Prosecutor's Office, reports "Gazeta.Ru".

Today, funeral of Denis Klimovich, militia lieutenant killed by Kartakaev, was held in Moscow. During the funeral, Vladimir Kolokoltsev, chief of the MIA Moscow department stated that the killer deserved a life imprisonment.

It was reported earlier that the Investigation Committee under the Prosecution Office intends to lay charges to the four arrested residents of the Caucasus region who, in the opinion of the investigation agencies, rendered medical assistance and provided shelter to Y. Kartakaev.
