Dagestan: bad weather leaves 10,000 without electricity

Snowfalls and wire icing in the north of Dagestan crushed down power line supports made of reinforced concrete. Ten thousand residents remain without electric power, while specialists promise to completely restore supplies by February 8-9.

The situation there remains tense. Mass supply disruptions started after January 26 as a result of ice build-up on power line wires, strong wind and heavy snowfalls.

On January 29, about 2500 persons remained without electricity in the Babayurt, Kazbek, Kizlyar and Tarum Districts. The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told at the OJSC "MRSK of Northern Caucasus" that all this time company specialists have been engaged in emergency-recovery works.

However, the continuing bad weather has worsened the situation. Eight reinforced-concrete supports failed under snow load, wires broke and stopped power supplies to consumers.

"As a result of emergency electricity cut-offs 98 transformer stations and about 10,000 person remained without electricity," the "MRSK Northern Caucasus" reports.
