Abandoned newborn found in central Sukhumi

In the centre of the capital of Abkhazia, at the back side of the building of the council of Ministers, burned down back during the war, teenagers found a newborn girl abandoned by unknown people.

On the "Old New Year" (January 14) Naur Argun and two his friends Alexander Ashuba and Marlene Matskharashvili passed by the building and heard baby's cries; they immediately called an ambulance. Soon, militiamen also arrived. The baby was promptly brought to the maternity home, and the city prosecutor's office started a check.

Natalia Markosyan, a children's doctor at the Sukhumi maternity home, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that now the condition of the baby causes no fear, but when the girl was brought to the maternity home, she looked like a piece of ice. The body was so much frozen, and the muscles were so stiff that doctors could not palpate the baby. The medical staff had tried a lot to save her. The child survived by miracle.

According to Gennady Ladariya, head of the Sukhumi militia, the UVD (Interior Division) called residents to immediately address the militia or use the anonymous phone for any information related to this crime.

"The person, who abandoned a newborn, should be duly punished," Mr Ladariya has assured and noted that nobody had reacted so far to the request, but there were plenty of people willing to adopt the baby; although it is beyond militia's competence to decide on this issue.

As a rule, in Abkhazia, abandoned children never remain unadopted; they get into safe families.
