Azerbaijani CEC announces final totals of municipal elections
On January 11, the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) of Azerbaijan approved the final totals of the elections on December 23, 2009 to the country's local government bodies.
According to Natig Mamedov, CEC Secretary, elections in 1709 municipalities, where 15,500 local council members were elected, were found to be valid. "Because of violations, which prevent establishing the will of voters, the election outcomes in 9 municipalities have been cancelled," said Mr Mamedov.
In total, voting at 33 polling stations was nullified.
As a whole, according to Natig Mamedov, "the elections took place according to the laws of Azerbaijan and democratic standards, having embodied the voters' free will."
In his turn, Akif Gurbanov, a CEC member from the "Umid" (Hope) Party, expressed disagreement with such estimation. In his opinion, the elections lacked equal conditions and fair competition.
"Sabirabad residents state violations during municipal elections", "Kerimli: 2009 was a lost year for Azerbaijan from democracy progress perspective", "Observers find municipal elections in Azerbaijan non-free and non-democratic".
