Opposition asks UN to supervise elections in Georgia

The oppositional parties of Georgia have prepared an appeal to the Secretary General of the United Nations asking him to take the forthcoming municipal elections in this country under the aegis of this international organization. The leaders of the opposition are sure that democratic elections in Georgia are possible only with a direct participation of the United Nations.

The opponents of the authorities assert that today the country has no electoral and political environment for holding free elections. "Under the existing electoral legislation, let all the desire of President Mikhail Saakashvili be present, fair elections are impossible," said Shalva Natelashvili, leader of the Labour Party, which initiated the address to the United Nations.

The "Echo Moskvy" Radio reports that all the interested persons were invited to sign the appeal to the UN Secretary General; while "Golos Rossii" (Voice of Russia) adds that representatives of all oppositional parties of Georgia - both parliamentary and non-parliamentary ones - have signed the document.
