Observers find municipal elections in Azerbaijan non-free and non-democratic
The municipal elections on December 23 in Azerbaijan were accompanied by rough violations of the law and, consequently, cannot be regarded as free, democratic and fair. This is asserted in the primary statement of the Centre for Monitoring Elections and Training in Democracy (CMETD) adopted on the monitoring results of the election campaign.
The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports that Bashir Suleimanly, Executive Director of the CMETD has stated, when presenting the preliminary monitoring results at a press conference on December 24 at the Baku Media Centre, that "all the phases of the campaign were accompanied by violationsnomination and registration of candidates, the period of pre-election agitation, on the voting day and in the process of vote tabulation."
In particular, as he said, "already at nomination of candidates local authorities interfered with the electoral process and rendered pressure on applicants, mainly, on activists of the opposition."
In total, 3215 candidates were rejected registration. Out of 31,861 candidates 17,688 persons represented the party in power "Eni Azerbaijan". Only 2460 candidates from all other parties were registered," said Mr Suleimanly.
