Case of convicted oppositionist Atspanyan is in European Court already

The case of Sarkis Atspanyan, an activist of the opposition of Armenia, who is serving his term in the Yerevan prison of "Vardashen", was sent to the European Court on Human Rights (ECtHR). This was reported by Asmik Pogosyan, Sarkis' wife.

Armen Khachatryan, an activist of the Centre for Legal Defence of Political Prisoners of the Armenian National Congress, said to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the Centre is engaged in preparing and sending cases of political prisoners to the ECtHR. According to his story, they have already sent about 70 cases or about 80 percent of all the cases on political prosecutions.

On June 19, the parliament of Armenia passed the Law "On Amnesty", which covers also the veterans of the Karabakh War. However, until now, the Ministry of Justice fails to sanction Atspanyan's liberation, as the case files have no certificate that he was at the Karabakh War.

We remind you that Sarkis Atspanyan, a war veteran and chairman of the public organization "Sardarabad", was convicted for a false denunciation - on November 4, 2008, he placed a statement in the "Armenia Time" newspaper that in the near future an attempt would be made on President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan.
