Convicted oppositionist hospitalized from prison in Armenia
Sasun Mikaelyan, an activist of the opposition, who was deprived of his deputy's mandate after the charges moved against him of organizing mass disorders on March 1, 2008, was urgently transferred from prison "Yerevan-Centre" to the Republic's Hospital of Armenia because of sharp deterioration of his health condition.
In recent time, Mikaelyan's condition grew essentially worse. His starting maxillary sinusitis gave complication to respiratory ways, which, in its turn, has affected the lungs and other organs. Under the doctors' statements, Sasun Mikaelyan needs an urgent surgery.
Being worried of the health deterioration in the political prisoner, local intellectuals and militaries have addressed President Serzh Sargsyan asking him to release Mikaelyan. However, Mr Sargsyan's press secretary answered that the President lacks such powers.
