In 2009, over hundred HIV-infected persons revealed in Armenia
Most of the Armenian HIV-infected patients are aged 25-39, 60 percent of all of them represent this group. 73 percent, or 590 HIV-infected patients in Armenia are males, 27 percent, or 218 cases, have been registered among women; the number of infected children makes 16 cases, or 2 percent. This was reported by Samvel Grigoryan, Director of the Republic's AIDS Prophylaxis Centre.
He has also reported that the number of HIV-infected patients registered in Armenia from 1988 till December 1, 2009, made 808 persons; of them 134 cases were revealed this year. According to Mr Grigoryan, in 50 percent of cases HIV-infection was transmitted in the heterosexual way, in 41.2 percent of cases - by means of intravenous drug injections. In Armenia, cases were also registered of infections as a result of homosexual relations; and also of mothers infecting their kids. The majority of infection cases fall on the capital, the Shirak District being the runner-up.
