Political prisoners accuse US, Russia and France of immoral deal with Yerevan

Today, the Committee in Defence of Political Prisoners and Persecuted Persons of Armenia has addressed its open letter to Presidents of Russia, USA and France, where it accuses the leaders of these countries of an immoral deal with the authorities of Armenia.

The members of the Committee remind Barack Obama, Dmitri Medvedev and Nicolas Sarkozy about tragic events on March 1, 2008 and about plenty of criminal cases against the opposition, which, in the opinion of the authors of the letter, had been forged by the authorities. Not a single culprit of those events, as the letter asserts, has ever faced trial.

The situation with political prisoners is still grave. Under pressure of the opposition and international organizations 30 political prisoners were released, but 17 more are still in prisons.

"Today, when your countries have combined efforts in settling the problems of Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenian-Turkish relations, by strange coincidence your countries and international organizations stopped their pressure on Serzh Sargsyan's regime towards restoration of democracy and release of political prisoners," the letter says.

In the majority of the Armenian society, this attitude undermines the trust in sincerity of world leaders' intentions and creates an impression that "an immoral deal was made, under which the global leaders keep their eyes closed on rough and mass violations of human rights and obvious facts of breaking the democracy in exchange on minor concessions by the illegitimate Sargsyan's regime."
