Withdrawal of UN mission from Abkhazia begins

On June 30, the first group of military observers of the United Nations Mission will leave Abkhazia. By July 15, this will be done by all the military observers and workers of the police component of the Mission. This was reported today to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by Edmond Mulet, Assistant to UN Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations.

The workers of the administrative and technical services will stay in Abkhazia for 2-3 months for complete winding up the Mission. "The Mission leaves Abkhazia with a great feeling of regret," said Mr Mulet.

He has added that he had arrived to Abkhazia with the aim to render support and assistance to international and local personnel and to express gratitude to Abkhazian authorities for long-term support of the work of the Mission. Mr Mulet has noted that he had hoped till the last moment that the Mission's mandate would be prolonged.
