PACE requests Armenia should strictly abide by the organization's resolutions

Lluis Maria de Puig, PACE chair, who after his three-day visit to Armenia which took place last week, requested that the Armenian president and the authorities should undertake clear and specific steps to abide by the organization's resolutions.

"The Armenian authorities, including the president, have declared that they will demonstrate their political will to fully implement resolutions Nos 1609 and 1620 Of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. However, such promises should be followed by clear and specific actions",  noted Lluis Maria de Puig in Strasburg.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports that Lluis Maria de Puig specifically underlined the necessity to carry out independent investigation of the March 1-2 events in Erevan and release the persons from custody.

For PACE, deprivation of freedom is unacceptable with regard to any persons, with the exception of those who committed violent acts or serious crimes", stated the PACE chair.

Talking about an independent investigation of the post-election events, Lluis Maria de Puig underlined that "without participation of the supporters of mister Levon Ter-Petrosian in the work of the commission formed by the National Assembly, the commission activity and its conclusions will not meet the PACE requirements for independence and reliability".
