Human rights activists bag subscriptions against Russian-Georgian war

Human rights activists have announced the start of collecting signatures against the war of Russia on Georgia. The statement emphasizes that the Russian Federation, being the stronger party, should exhibit greater restraint.

"We call the civil society to support our stand and resolutely oppose the escalation of the Russian-Georgian conflict," runs the appeal of human rights activists addressed to Russian politicians, statesmen and military commanders.

Human rights activists are convinced that "Russia, as a much stronger military power, should expose greater restraint."

According to their story, "it is necessary to stop flirting with recognition-non-recognition of self-proclaimed republics - Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and reject the cynical use of their status as a tool for blackmailing Georgia on its accession to NATO.

The appeal that was quoted by the "Echo Moskvy" Radio was already signed, in particular, by Liudmila Alekseeva, chair of the Moscow Helsinki Group, Lev Ponomaryov, leader of the Movement "For Human Rights", and Mikhail Schneider, secretary of the Action Committee of the All-Russian Civil Congress.
