Young soldiers are still trialled for treason in Azerbaijan

In Azerbaijan on June 7, a preparatory session will be held by the Court for Grave War Crimes under chairmanship of Judge Mamedbagir Zeinalov on the case of former military Eldeniz Nuriev who is accused of "treason," "violation of combat duty regulations" and "desertion." The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent learnt about it at the Court.

The "Caucasian Knot" has informed earlier that Eldeniz Nuriev was taken prisoner by armed forces of Armenia on December 31, 2006, and was released with assistance of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on January 16, 2007.

Another preparatory session was also held at the Court for Grave War Crimes under chairmanship of Judge Iskender Gadzhiev on the case of three other former soldiers - Elman Ahmedov, Ramin Mamedagaev and Agasalim Salimov, accused of "treason" and "violation of combat duty regulations." It follows from the materials of the investigation that these soldiers were criminated of association with Armenian reconnaissance in July-October 2006 during their combat duty. They were exposed by the employees of the Ministry for National Security and arrested. Both processes will be held in the closed regime.

Military expert Uzeir Dzhafarov said in his talk to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent: "The majority of young soldiers run away from officers' arbitrariness, hazing and corruption. What secrets can a rank-and-file soldier tell to Armenians? Most likely, Armenians know about our army more than our ordinary soldiers. One should not justify the weaknesses of our militaries, but we should not judge them strictly without getting into the conditions of their military service."
