Dozens of thousands came to opposition rally in Armenia

Today, the capital of Armenia hosted a rally of the opposition dated to the first anniversary of the tragic events on March 1, 2008, in Yerevan, when at dispersal of a peaceful demonstration 10 persons were lost. By different estimates, the rally brought together from 50 to 60 thousand persons.

The event lasted for 45 minutes only, and the only speaker was Levon Ter-Petrosyan, leader of the opposition and ex-president of Armenia. His presentation was on the detailed analysis of the current situation in Armenia.

"Armenia marks one year after tragic events on March 1, 2008, in the atmosphere of violence and continuing persecutions, while the authorities did nothing to find the true culprits of the tragic events," said Levon Ter-Petrosyan.

"Prisons are still packed with activists of the opposition accused with false charges. Dozens of thousands were forced to the police, hundreds of citizens lost their jobs or businesses. That is, the authorities have taken no lessons from the tragedy," the leader of the opposition has noted.

Mr Ter-Petrosyan treated the steps of the authorities towards development of democratic institutes as evasive and intended to mislead the European community.

Then, the audience commemorated the victims of the tragic events on March 1 last year with a minute of silence.
