Convicts for the fire at boarding house for elderly persons in Krasnodar Territory will appeal against their verdict

Today, the Eisk City Court of the Krasnodar Territory today has passed a verdict on the fire at the boarding house for old people in Kamyshevatskaya village in March 2007. Director of the house Galina Korvel was sentenced to 3.5 years of freedom deprivation in colony-settlement. Her deputy Yuri Bashko was sentenced to 4 years in colony. They were found guilty of breaching fire safety regulations.

The convicts found the verdict too severe and expressed their intention to appeal against it.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the hearing on the fire case in Kamyshevatskaya boarding house had been postponed several times. Thus, the hearing was appointed on February 3 after it failed on January 26. And on January 21, the hearing was postponed because the judge was sick.

On January 20, the state prosecutor spoke at the trial and demanded five years of prison for each of the defendants.

We remind you that that the fire started at 1 a.m. on March 20, 2007, in the ground floor of the two-level brick house, where repairs were made. 62 persons were lost, 30 more were hospitalized, later, a woman died in hospital.

The investigation asserts that careless smoking caused the fire. It was established that the Federal Fire-Fighting Service ("Gospozhnadzor") held repeated inspections of the house and revealed numerous violations of the fire prevention regulations. However, they were not eliminated.
