ECtHR bans extradition of Azeri journalist Afghan Sadygov
The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has banned Georgia from extraditing journalist Afghan Sadygov to Azerbaijan until a decision on the merits of the case is made. Human rights defenders intend to seek the journalist's release.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that doctors stated that Afghan Sadygov was receiving the necessary treatment, but remains in grave condition due to his refusal to eat.
On September 20, 2024, Sadygov went on a hunger strike at the Tbilisi SIZO (pre-trial prison) in protest against his arrest and denial of political asylum. On February 6, he agreed to end his dry hunger strike, but continued to refuse food. Activists of the NGO “Social Solidarity Centre” reported that Sadygov is in critical condition; he regularly faints and receiving no necessary nutritional supplements.
"The ECtHR has banned Georgia from extraditing the exiled journalist to Azerbaijan until a decision on the merits of the case is made. As you know, sometimes it takes years to consider a case by the ECtHR," said Tamta Mikeladze, Director of the above NGO. She added that Sadygov had resumed eating.
Sevindj Sadygova, a journalist and Afghan's wife, has expressed gratitude to everyone who fought for justice for her husband.
