Policemen convicted in Dagestan for beating detainee up

After finding them guilty of beating up a detainee and falsifying proofs within a criminal case, the Nogai District Court has sentenced the police chief of the town of Yuzhno-Sukhokumsk (Dagestan) and three of his subordinates to colony terms.

The deputy head of the local division of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) and three division operative agents have been sentenced to imprisonment for terms ranging from 3.5 to five years; the court has found them guilty of abuse of office with the use of violence and falsification of proofs, the Dagestani Prosecutor's Office (PO) has reported.

According to the court, the above policemen "had illegally brought a citizen to the division in order to obtain an explanation from him, illegally held him there and caused him bodily harm."

"The citizen's falsified and obtained explanation was presented to the investigator for the criminal prosecution of another person," the PO's website has explained.
