Twenty years since attack of Basaev's militants on Ingushetia

It is 20 years since the attack of Shamil Basaev's militants on Ingushetia, as a result of which 78 people were killed and 113 others were wounded. In Nazran, renovation of the memorial to the victims of the attack is being completed, the city Mayoralty has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the names of 131 Basaev's militants-attackers on Ingushetia in 2004 had been established, of which 68 were convicted, 52 were killed, and 11 others are declared wanted. According to the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF), up to 300 people took part in the attack, including residents of Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria and Chechnya. As a result, 78 of them were killed and 113 others were wounded.

At night on June 22, 2004, militants led by Basaev attacked many targets in Ingushetia, including in Nazran and Karabulak. Fierce shootouts of law enforcers with militants continued almost until morning, and then the attackers retreated towards Chechnya.

During the hostilities, there was "a feeling that a war had begun," said Tamerlan Akiev, an eyewitness. "I saw mutilated bodies and many burned ones ... People had confused faces. They couldn't recover after the nightmare," the online newspaper "Ingushetia" has quoted him as saying.

Border guards fought for several hours and prevented militants from breaking through into the territory of the border detachment, not allowing them to seize weapons and medicines there. After several hours of fighting, law enforcers took control of the situation.

Let us recall that on February 2, 2011, the court sentenced 12 figurants in the case of an attack on Ingushetia (two natives of Chechnya and ten residents of Ingushetia). Five were sentenced to 25 years, three to 20 years and three to 10 and 12 years in jail. One defendant, Ilez Ganiev, was sentenced to life imprisonment. Their relatives insisted that the case was fabricated.
