Volgograd resident fined for posting rainbow flag on social media

In Volgograd, a court fined a local resident 1000 roubles, finding her guilty of publicly displaying extremist symbols.

According to the investigators’ version, a student posted on her page in Instagram* an image with the symbols of the international LGBT** social movement, recognized as extremist in Russia by a court’s decision. The post contained a rainbow flag with six longitudinal stripes. The student admitted her guilt and repented.

The “Caucasian Knot” has also reported that in Volgograd, a court fined Stanislav Terentyev, the former editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Kolokol” (Bell), finding him guilty of publicly displaying Nazi symbols.

*On March 21, 2022, the Tverskoi District Court of Moscow banned the activities in Russia of the Meta Company, owning the Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, in connection with extremist activities.

**On November 30, 2023, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation declared the movement an “extremist organization” and banned the “international public movement of LGBT people.” With this decision, the court granted the claim of the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ), sent to the court on November 17, 2023.
