In Kaspiysk, managers of brick factory suspected of using slave labour

Information about labour slavery of a Belarusian resident at a brick factory located in the Dagestani city of Kaspiysk has been confirmed, and a criminal investigation has been launched, investigators report.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on January 25, it became known that volunteers of the “Alternative” movement helped Dmitry, a resident of Belarusian capital Minsk, escape from labour slavery at a brick factory near Kaspiysk. The resident of Belarus came to Dagestan voluntarily and got a job at the brick factory by himself, the Dagestani Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) reported on the results of the inspection.

Dmitry himself says he agreed to the job offer that was made to him at a train station in Moscow. However, on the spot, recruiters took away his passport and demanded from him to “work off’ the amount for which he “had been bought.”

According to the investigators’ version, in January, the 29-year-old “citizen of the neighbouring state” came to Dagestan to work at a brick production factory in the Karabudakhkent District. Now investigators are busy with questioning witnesses and finding out whether brick factory’s managers have committed “similar criminal acts against other persons.”

In Dagestan, the problem of labour slavery has become less acute in recent years, local journalists point out. The practice of labour slavery is gaining momentum in the Rostov Region, the Stavropol Region, and Adygea, reports an activist of the “Alternative” movement.
