Lawyers loose contact with Chechen Selima Ismailova, who ran away from home

After the return of Selima Ismailova to Chechnya, lawyers have been unable to find out her whereabouts. Human rights defenders did not find Selima Ismailova at the police station, where Chechen law enforcers were supposed to deliver her in a theft case.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on June 12, it became known that Chechen law enforcers arrived at a Moscow airport to pick up Selima Ismailova, who had fled from domestic violence. On June 13, Selima Ismailova flew to Grozny, being accompanied by the law enforcers.

Selima Ismailova was born in Chechnya, and later, her family moved to Germany. The girl complained to representatives of the German authorities about domestic violence, but her mother threatened her to force her to withdraw the complaints. In 2021, the father took Selima Ismailova to Chechnya, after which he often beat the girl and threatened to kill her, the “Marem” human rights group reported. Selima Ismailova was detained at the Moscow airport on suspicion of theft: she allegedly stole money from her female relative.

Marie Davtyan, the head of the Centre for the Protection of Victims of Domestic Violence, notes that, as a rule, the human rights defenders no longer have connections with the girls whose families managed to return them after accusations of domestic violence.

At the same time, Marie Davtyan expressed the hope for the prudence of the Selima Ismailova’s relatives. “Not only the Russian authorities, but also the German authorities are aware of the situation,” Marie Davtyan emphasized.
