Defence reports deterioration of Zarema Musaeva's health condition

Zarema Musaeva's health condition has deteriorated at the SIZO (pre-trial prison), where she is not receiving the necessary medical treatment, her advocate has stated. Investigators from Nizhny Novgorod are due to conduct a new investigation after the prosecutor's office had ruled that the refusal to investigate reports about the violations during Musaeva's detention was unjustified, lawyers assert.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 31, 2022, the Nizhny Novgorod Prosecutor's Office found the actions of the investigator, who had redirected reports about violations during Zarema Musaeva's detention to Chechnya as unjustified.

On August 26, 2022, the "Support for Political Prisoners" project declared Musaeva to be a political prisoner, indicating that authorities were ignoring the complaints about law enforcers' actions while detaining the woman. In September 2022, human rights defenders achieved a check of the circumstances of Musaeva's detention in Nizhny Novgorod.

Musaeva's health condition has worsened, Alexander Nemov, her advocate, has stated. "She receives no medical treatment … Her diseases are progressing," he has added.

Zarema Musaeva, whose case has been considered by a court in Grozny since June 2022, is accused of assaulting a law enforcer and committing a fraud. The court, by extending her arrest, has upheld the investigators' groundless arguments that the sick woman could leave the republic, her son Abubakar Yangulbaev has pointed out.
