Authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina refuse entry to group of natives of Chechnya and Ingushetia

About 20 natives of Chechnya and Ingushetia arrived through Turkey to Bosnia and Herzegovina to apply later for political asylum in Croatia, but they were deported from the Sarajevo airport to Istanbul.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that natives of Chechnya face problems in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in particular, when they try to get to Croatia. On December 28, it became known that at least 30 natives of Chechnya were stuck at the border due to the refusal of border guards to let them into Croatia. The natives of Chechnya face deportation to Russia, human rights defenders note.

Earlier, on November 7, it became known that in Croatia, law enforcers detained at least 15 natives of Chechnya who arrived from Russia and subjected them to violence with the demand to refuse asylum requests.

The natives from Chechnya and Ingushetia said that they were expelled from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and they had to fly to Istanbul, the “Kavkaz.Realii”* reports.

According to them, on December 28, about 20 natives of Chechnya and Ingushetia arrived in Sarajevo from Turkey planning to come to Croatia and seek political asylum there. However, at the border control, their passports were taken away from them, after which they, including minor children, were kept “in a cold construction container” during almost a day, and were not given hot water to prepare formula feed for infants.

One of those people specified that they left Russia because of the mobilization. In particular, his wife, who works as a doctor, received summons to the military registration and enlistment office, after which the family decided to immediately leave the country. “The border guards asked us about the purpose of our visit to their country. To avoid problems, we said that we were travelling as tourists … Then we were told that every one of us should have had 75 euros per person per day. But what will my child do for 75 euros a day? The babies eat formula feed that we brought with us. All they need is boiling water. We had a hotel booked in Bosnia for us,” said the visitor as quoted by the “Kavkaz.Realii”*.

According to Svevlad Hoffman, the advisor to the director of the Border Police of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the visitors were detained for “data verification.”

  • Lawyers assess justness for law enforcers' visits to Rizvanov's relatives

Law enforcers are entitled to conduct prophylactic conversations, but these are purely voluntary, while refusing to identify oneself and take photos and videos is a violation of the right to privacy, as well as an abuse of power. This is how lawyers have commented on the visit of Dagestani law enforcers to relatives of convicted Abubakar Rizvanov.
