Court liquidates “Journalists’ and Media Workers’ Trade Union”

In Moscow, a court granted the demand of the Prosecutor’s Office to liquidate the “Journalists’ and Media Workers’ Trade Union”. The Prosecutor’s Office did not provide any grounds for the liquidation of the trade union, and the decision will be challenged, advocate Maxim Krupsky says.

The work of the trade union has been suspended since July 4 by a court’s decision in connection with the initiation of a case under the article on public actions aimed at discrediting the Russian Armed Forces. The case was instituted because of the publication on the trade union’s website.

The “Journalists’ and Media Workers’ Trade Union” arose in connection with an attack on human rights defenders and journalists on the border of Ingushetia and Chechnya on March 9, 2016. Then eight human rights defenders and journalists were beaten.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, since January 2019, members of the trade union had not made contributions and were also repeatedly held accountable for participating in unsanctioned actions, in particular, in support of journalist Ivan Safronov, sentenced for high treason.

More than 600 journalists are members of the trade union, mostly independent media workers. The trade union campaigned in support of Dagestani journalists Svetlana Anokhina and Abdulmumin Gadjiev and Ingush activist Zarifa Sautieva, trade union spokesperson Andrei Zhvirblis reported.
