Activist Bakhtiyar Gadjiev renounces Azerbaijani citizenship

Activist Bakhtiyar Gadjiev sent an appeal to the President of Azerbaijan to renounce the citizenship of the country. The activist has explained his decision by receiving threats from the local law enforcement bodies.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that Bakhtiyar Gadjiev was detained in Baku on August 22. According to the activist, law enforcers forced him to delete his critical posts on social media about the Azerbaijani Interior Minister and also threatened him with arrest for new posts about the Minister.

According to Bakhtiyar Gadjiev, in Azerbaijan, he was subjected to threats, kidnapping, and interference in private life, but the law enforcement bodies did not take any measures, but, on the contrary, subjected him to violence.

“I am concerned for my life and no longer want to remain a citizen of Azerbaijan … Azerbaijan is a member of the Council of Europe, but behaves like North Korea,” Bakhtiyar Gadjiev said.

In April, Bakhtiyar Gadjiev, the head of the “Positive Changes” NGO, reported that he was kidnapped by four men in masks who subjected him to humiliating treatment. The kidnappers demanded from him to delete his critical posts about the Minister of Internal Affairs and a pro-government activist. Moreover, the kidnappers threatened Bakhtiyar Gadjiev with reprisals.
