Baku police refuse to institute a case on beating of journalist Aslanov in a penal colony

When explaining the refusal to institute a criminal case, the police said that a warder and prisoners of an Azerbaijani penal colony did not confirm the information that journalist Polad Aslanov was beaten by a cellmate.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on April 1, when visiting convicted journalist Polad Aslanov, his spouse Gyulmira Aslanova noticed signs of violence on her husband’s face.

Today, Gyulmira Aslanova has received a decision from an investigator of the Nizami District Police Department to refuse to institute a criminal case on the beating of Polad Aslanov, the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent has been informed by the very spouse of the convicted journalist. Aziz Rustamov, the chief investigator of the Nizami District Police Department, stated in his resolution that the interviewed witnesses did not confirm the facts of the cellmate’s attack on Polad Aslanov.

Gyulmira Aslanova said that she consulted with her husband’s advocate and that they decided to file an appeal against the decision of the Nizami District Police Department.

Journalist’s advocate Elchin Sadygov called the investigation “biased.” According to the advocate, in the course of the investigation, those witnesses who were actually present during the incident, who were named by Polad Aslanov, should have been also questioned.
