Refugees from Gadrut and Shushi demand from UN to grant them refugee status

Participants of a protest action held in front of the UN office in Yerevan demanded to grant refugee status to people who left the territories that came under the control of Azerbaijan as a result of the 2020 war.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on July 6, refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh began a sit-in in front of the Armenian government building demanding to grant them an official status.

Today, refugees from the cities of Gadrut and Shushi have held a protest action in front of the UN Yerevan office with the demand to protect their rights and assist in granting refugee status, the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent reports from the scene.

The UN must abandon the policy of double standards and protect the rights of residents of Nagorno-Karabakh, Ashot Arutyunyan, a refugee from Shushi, has told the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent.

Arthur Stepanyan, a refugee from Gadrut, believes that granting refugee status will help the people return to their homes in accordance with the trilateral agreement dated November 9, 2020. “The authorities of Armenia are not taking any steps to ensure and protect our rights. They are trying to assure us that the government of Artsakh should deal with our problems. Then why does Nikol Pashinyan make territorial concessions?” the refugee from Gadrut told the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent.
