Georgian President vetoes wiretapping bill

For the first time during her presidency, the Georgian President, Salome Zurabishvili, has used her veto power on the wiretapping bill. She believes that the proposed amendments are still further restricting human rights.

On June 22, Ms Zurabishvili vetoed the bill that was supposed to give law enforcers greater powers in secret wiretapping and shadowing, the Radio NOR has reported on its website.

Salome Zurabishvili has noted that she disagreed with the bill and stated that she was aware of the ruling party's possibility to overcome her veto.

"I know that the veto will be overridden; and it will not change the situation in essence, but it's like that. And I will veto all the bills that will be adopted in the wrong direction during these six months," the "Georgia-Online" has quoted President Zurabishvili as stating.

"This is more a political veto than a legal one, because today in Georgia it is impossible to adopt a law that further restricts human rights, when, on the contrary, we are asked to give more guarantees in this direction, to be more democratic and more European," she has explained.
