Opposition Georgian MP claims being attacked

Two men attacked Khatuna Samnidze, the leader of the Republican Party, in the centre of Tbilisi. The police detained suspects.

MP Khatuna Samnidze, the leader of the opposition Republican Party, reported about the attack on her in the centre of Tbilisi. On her page in Facebook*, Khatuna Samnidze wrote that two men approached her and oppositionist David Berdzenishvili on Rustaveli Avenue, started to threaten and insult them, and attacked them, the “News-Georgia” reported.

According to Khatuna Samnidze, the attack was planned. The politicians did not need medical assistance. “In this country, the opposition can no longer walk without body guards,” said Khatuna Samnidze as quoted by the “News-Georgia”. According to the publication, the police accumulated at the scene.

The attackers have been detained, and they are being kept in a car of the patrol police, the “InterPressNews” reports with reference to the politician. “Now they are detained by a patrol of the police. Their main phrase was: ‘You won’t be able to walk here alone without body guards. We will arrange that for you,” the “News-Georgia” quoted Khatuna Samnidze as saying.
