Former Georgian military convicted in South Ossetia

Mamuka Chkhikvadze, who was detained by South-Ossetian authorities near the border of the region, has been sentenced to five years and six months in prison.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 12, 2021, near the village of Zemo Nikozi on the border with South Ossetia, Mamuka Chkhikvadze, a Georgian citizen, was detained. According to South-Ossetian authorities, he deliberately violated the border.

In Tskhinvali, Mamuka Chkhikvadze, a former military serviceman, was sentenced to 5.5 years of imprisonment, the "Sova" outlet reported on May 12, citing the Georgia's State Security Service (SSS).

According to the SSS, this decision was preceded by Mamuka Chkhikvadze's illegal detention by Russian forces and putting forward trumped-up charges against him, the "Georgia-Online" has reported today.

"The sentencing of Mamuka Chkhikvadze to unlawful imprisonment has once again demonstrated the inhuman and criminal nature of the occupation, for which the Russian Federation bears full responsibility as a force exercising control over the occupied territories," the "Georgia-Online" has quoted the SSS as stating.
