Georgian doctors ask USA to help releasing Saakashvili

In Tbilisi, protesters demand a meeting with the US ambassador aiming to tell him about the state of health of Mikheil (Mikhail) Saakashvili, the third president of Georgia, and ask for help in setting Saakashvili free. His health condition has worsened, an oppositional MP has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on February 21, Mikhail Saakashvili announced a new hunger strike demanding proper medical treatment, but on March 10 he interrupted his protest. On April 20, in court, he asked doctor's help. His supporters have demanded to place him into a foreign clinic for treatment.

On May 3, several Georgian doctors held a protest action in front of the US Embassy in Georgia. They believe that without the intervention of the international community, Saakashvili will be left in prison, the "Mtavari Arkhi" TV Company has reported.

Manana Djabashvili, one of the protesters, has stated that it is still possible to save Saakashvili, but "there is no time left for this."

Shalva Papuashvili, the Speaker, asserts that Saakashvili rejects medical care, thereby harming his health; and this is encouraged by his supporters. He believes that the actions demanding to transfer Saakashvili to a foreign clinic are used to "create unrests" in the country.

Carl Harzel, the EU Ambassador to Georgia, said that he was concerned about reports about Saakashvili's health.
