North-Caucasian Muslims welcome Ramadan

Believers in Northern Caucasus have welcomed the holy month of Ramadan with collective prayers; in the regions, various cultural and charity events are timed to the holy month of fasting.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that this year the Muslims' Ramadan starts in Dagestan, Chechnya, Kabardino-Balkaria and North Ossetia on April 2, the Muftiates have announced. The Russia Spiritual Administration of Muslims (SAM) announced the start of Ramadan on April 1.

For Muslims, Ramadan begins with collective prayers; during this period, various cultural, sports and charity events are traditionally held.

On the eve of Ramadan, on the basis of the Kizilyurt Rehabilitation Centre for Minors, 200 low-income families received food packages and new clothes, the Dagestani Ministry of Labour and Social Development reported on April 1 on its website.

The head of Dagestan, Sergey Melikov, provided financial help in holding the first iftar in the main "Tent of Ramadan" located in the territory of the Central Juma Mosque of Makhachkala, the outlet named "islamdag.ru" has reported with reference to the press service of the "Insan" Fund.

In honour of the holy month of Ramadan, the Chechen Ministry of Youth Affairs has launched the "Morning Namaz (Prayer)" campaign. Within the campaign, each child aged 14 and younger, who will administer morning prayers during the entire month of Ramadan at the Central Mosque "Heart of Chechnya", will receive a valuable gift.

New traditions have evolved in the modern Muslim society during the Ramadan, the "Chechnya Inside" blogger run on the "Caucasian Knot" has noted. "Thus, for several years now, some of the entrepreneurs in the Chechen Republic on the eve and during the Ramadan are forgiving debts to their clients; and those who can afford it, close the debts of the poor," the blogger has written.
