Georgian activists demand reaction of country’s authorities to events in Ukraine

At a rally in Tbilisi, members of the “United National Movement” Party and activists expressed their solidarity with the people of Ukraine and demanded the reaction of the Georgian authorities to the Russian special military operation.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that at a rally in Tbilisi held on February 19, activists called on the authorities of Georgia to demonstrate their support for Ukraine. Today, Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced the start of a military operation in connection with the situation in Donbass.

The special military operation is aimed at taking control over the territories of the Donetsk and Lugansk Regions, but the possibility of further advancement deep into Ukraine cannot be completely ruled out, experts say. According to them, the operation in Donbass has common features with the five-day war with Georgia in August 2008, but on a much larger scale.

Several dozen members of opposition parties and civil activists gathered for a rally in front of the Ukrainian Embassy in Georgia. Ekaterina Kherkheulidze, a member of the Georgian parliament from the “United National Movement” (UNM) Party, pointed out that the entire international community should express solidarity with Ukraine.

Levan Bezhashvili, another MP from the UNM Party, drew attention to the inaction of the Georgian authorities, despite the solidarity of Georgian activists with residents of Ukraine.
