Alizamin Salaev released due to amnesty

Today, Alizamin Salaev, an activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), has been released in accordance with the Amnesty Act. The activist complains that his health state deteriorated during the imprisonment.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on April 20, 2020, Alizamin Salaev was found guilty of defamation and insult and sentenced to two years and three months of imprisonment. The accusation is based on a video posted on social media in which the activist criticized a policeman.

Alizamin Salaev was released on January 19. “I was released in connection with the Amnesty Act, announced in early November. According to the document, the convicts who had to serve a prison term of less than three years and who had to serve less than six months of their sentences were subject to release,” Alizamin Salaev told the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent.

The activist reported about serious health problems that arose while he was kept in prison. “My vision got much weaker, and I experience difficulties while walking: my legs are failing. All the above is the result of torture and frequent hunger strikes in prison,” Alizamin Salaev said.

On September 21, 2021, Alizamin Salaev reported that he was tortured twice in a punishment cell of the penal colony, and he went on a hunger strike in protest. According to the oppositionist, he was kept in the punishment cell for 10 days for refusing to write an appeal to quit the PFPA and condemn the activities of the party.
