Saakashvili extends term of his ultimatum to authorities of Georgia

Mikhail Saakashvili, the third president of Georgia, agrees to wait till late January for the fulfilment of his demands concerning involvement of foreign doctors in his treatment and visits of advocates. In case of refusal to fulfil his demands, Mikhail Saakashvili can go on hunger strike again, his advocate says today.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that after his return from a hospital to the Rustavi prison in December 2021, Mikhail Saakashvili demanded to let independent doctors visit him and to ensure confidentiality of advocates’ visits to him. The former president of Georgia threatened to resort to extreme forms of protest if his demands were not met by January 6.

Saakashvili returned to Georgia in late September and was arrested on October 1, as he had been sentenced in absentia in Georgia to imprisonment within two criminal cases. After his arrest, he held a 50-day-long hunger strike, which he stopped after achieving a transfer from prison and the prison hospital to a military one.

Shota Tutberidze, an advocate of Mikhail Saakashvili, reports that his client extends the term of his ultimatum. “Mikhail Saakashvili insists that if his demands are not met and if no adequate medical assistance is provided to him by late January, he will resort to extreme forms of protest. The extreme form may include, inter alia, a hunger strike, but my client may express [his protest] also in other forms,” emphasized Shota Tutberidze as quoted by the “InterPressNews” today.
