Rise in bread prices sparks discontent among Azerbaijan residents

After the New Year, bread prices went up in Azerbaijani stores, which was a surprise to buyers, the local residents interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" have complained.

Since the first days of 2022, residents of Azerbaijan have faced higher bread prices in stores. Thus, in a store in Narimanov Street in Baku, the price of the national tendir-chorek bread cake went up from 0.6 manats (USD 0.35) to 0.65 manats (USD 0.38). The so-called "factory bread" – loaves of bread baked by bakeries since Soviet times – went up from 0.4 manats (USD 0.24) to 0.46 manats (USD 0.27).

Gusein Ismailogly, a resident of Baku, has angrily commented on the rise in bread prices with a quote from former President Geidar Aliev: "The Azerbaijani people are patient; they will endure everything." A woman from Baku named Solmaz, a former janitor, also expressed her dissatisfaction. "Everything bad that happens falls on the heads of the poor," she complained to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

Kamal Isfendiyarov, a resident of the village of Gakhmugal, Gakh District, has also shared his dissatisfaction with the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, treating authorities' actions as "shamelessness."

The rise in bread prices was preceded by the end of subsidies and the rise in prices for imported wheat.
