Muratov calls for creation of an international tribunal against torture

During the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, Dmitry Muratov, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Novaya Gazeta”, has noted that cases on torture of convicts and persons under investigation in Russia should be considered by an international tribunal.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on October 8, the Nobel Committee awarded the Peace Prize to Dmitry Muratov, the editor-in-chief of the “Novaya Gazeta”, with the motivation: “for the efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace.”

Today, the award ceremony for the Nobel Peace Prize laureates has taken place in the Norwegian capital.

At the ceremony, Dmitry Muratov came up with an initiative to create an international tribunal against torture, which would investigate cases of torture in different countries and bring the guilty persons to justice. “To identify the executioners and their owners involved in such crimes. <...> Torture must be recognized as a grave crime,” said Dmitry Muratov as quoted by the edition.

According to Dmitry Muratov, journalism in Russia is now “going through dark times.” “Over the past few months, more than a hundred journalists, media outlets, human rights defenders, and NGOs have been marked with the status of ‘foreign agents.’ In Russia, they are ‘enemies of the people’,” the “Novaya Gazeta” quoted Dmitry Muratov as saying in his speech.
