Kadyrov cordons off Chechnya’s borders amid controversy over Fortanga River channel

All law enforcement units of Chechnya have been moved to the borders of the republic after a failed meeting of Magomed Daudov with representatives of the Ingush Council of Teips near the Fortanga River. The three-day exercises demonstrate the Chechnya’s readiness for war amid an unstable situation in the world, Ramzan Kadyrov notes.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on November 11, the “Chechenavtodor” carried out excavation work on the bank of the Fortanga River, along which the border with Ingushetia passes. The above work provoked indignation in Ingushetia, both among local residents and among officials. Ramzan Kadyrov said that the protest against the work was organized in Ingushetia by “a bunch of provocateurs who were trying to put through the nationalist ace.” The leader of Chechnya also noted that he was able to take away from Ingushetia the lands that had passed to the republic during the time of Dzhokhar Dudayev. On November 21, a Chechen delegation arrived on the bank of the Fortanga River to decide on the belonging of the border lands in accordance with Sharia, but no representatives of Ingushetia did appear.

At a meeting with law enforcement officials, Ramzan Kadyrov ordered to conduct large-scale three-day exercises. All law enforcement and power units of the Chechen Republic were directed to the line of its 841-kilometer administrative border and deployed at temporary sentinel points, the “Chechnya Segodnya” reported on November 22.

Ramzan Kadyrov explained the three-day exercises by the unstable situation in the world and by the fact that Chechnya, according to him, was the main outpost on the southern borders of Russia. “There are no military actions in the republic, but the situation around our country can transform at any moment, and we must be ready for geopolitical changes in the world,” said Ramzan Kadyrov as quoted by the “Grozny-Inform” on the day of the meeting with law enforcement officials.

When commenting on a document banning namaz (prayer) in the Andropovsky District of the Stavropol Territory that had already been cancelled by the district’s authorities, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has called the ban an “open discrimination and legal lawlessness.” The leader of Chechnya has suggested that the authorities of other regions should build more mosques if they do not want namaz in the street.
